Fifteen Years in the Making
Waveco’s first prototype domed ASR (Artificial Surfing Reef), the Airwave, started as an art concept that sought to completely change how we think about creating waves in the ocean.
The journey from design concept to first full-size prototype took ten years of meticulous thought, drawings, and research—interspersed with the beautiful chaos of life, family, and relentless prototyping.

Early Prototypes
We began with miniature plaster domes in man-made ponds to study "mini-waves." Through "wrangling bladders" in the surf with rubber prototypes, we learned the most valuable lesson of all: exactly what NOT to do at full scale.
The Bunbury Deployment
In 2018, we deployed a 150-tonne sand-slurry bladder at Bunbury’s Back Beach. While it successfully created peeling waves, a final-day overpressure event led to a seam split. It wasn't a failure—it was the catalyst for our next breakthrough.
A Dual-Design Future
Post-2018, we pivoted. We designed and patented a modular concrete version of the Airwave—one that creates perfect waves while providing substantial marine habitat.
Simultaneously, we developed a conventional Granite ASR design. Waveco now offers two distinct, globally competitive solutions.
